August 2023

Laurel......

When you're up 'til past midnight fishing maggots and fly eggs out of ears and every other orifice.  Makes it worthwhile when the end result is when you see a little poser like this.  Meet 'Laurel' who was rescued from Stanah on 19th August after she was seen to be out during the day.  She was in a bad way, dehydrated and icy cold. Flies had been landing on her and she was covered in fly eggs, some had already started to hatch into maggots.  She recovered well and responded to treatment for a bad tummy and dehydration.  Also received treatment for an overload of internal parasites.

Hopalong......

'Hopalong' was admitted late one evening as an emergency after she was spotted on a webcam with a severely swollen and infected front foot by a local vigilant fosterer. There didn't appear to be anything broken but she had lost at least one toe.  She was given strong antibiotic cover which continued for at a week and a painkiller to be given over the next three days.  The swelling had reduced a little the following morning.  It was hoped if the foot could be kept clean (which is not that easy with a hedgehog!) and get on top of the infection she would be as good as new, albeit minus one or two toes.

UPDATE:  Hopalong is now all mended and has gone for release.  Thank you Anne for taking her back to your garden where you can keep an eye on her.

Penny......

'Penny' was rescued 3rd August from a garden just down the road. Although an adult, she barely weighed 400gms and was extremely emaciated, just skin and bone. She was also icy cold. She had been given warmed subcutaneous fluids and was tucked up warm on a heat mat. Very poorly this one so not sure what the outcome will be.

Update:  Sadly Penny did not survive.
