Success Stories

Over the years we have cared for thousands of hedgehogs and each one had it's own story to tell.  Sometimes these stories can be hilarious -  and some can just break your heart.  These are just a few of our success stories.

Walter

Walter was rescued after finding his way into a lady's front porch one evening and bedding himself down for a sleep in an old trainer! This was how he arrived at the Rescue Centre. Walter was quite an old hedgehog, weary and worn out from his time in the wild. It had certainly taken its toll on him.  Several weeks of five star treatment later he was fit for release, but because of his age and the fact he would struggle to survive on his own, it was decided to release him into a very large enclosed garden where he could receive ongoing care if needed and with someone there who could keep an eye on him.

Tufty

This little guy was in a bit of a mess to say the least when he was rescued.  Suffering from mites he was in such poor condition he could hardly support his own weight. Tufty had lost most of his spines and all his fur had fallen out.  It was several months of treatment before we could restore him to his former handsome self.  After a clean bill of health and a full coat of prickles he was returned back into the wild.

Wheezy

Little Wheezy aged four weeks came to us suffering from breathing difficulties.  He spent two days receiving oxygen therapy and nebulised medications in an incubator as well as replacement fluids and antibiotics. He responded really well to treatment and after a few days was well enough to be transferred into a recovery unit.  Wheezy loved his food and took great delight in sitting in his dinner while he ate.  Six weeks later he had made a full recovery and was released back into the wild.

Hannah

Hannah was found in poor condition suffering from mites and ringworm.  Soon after admission she ended up losing most of her fur and clumps of her spines fell out.  Four weeks of medication later her spines and fur started to grow back, but it was several weeks more before she could be released with a full coat of prickles to protect her.

Swampy

This female was brought to the Rescue Centre by a Ranger from Stanah Country Park after being found trying to unsuccessfully get up the water filled mud bank with her head trapped inside a plastic drinks carton.  After it was carefully removed she was given the first of many baths needed to clean her up.
After a few days of care she was successfully released into a large safe release garden in the Stanah area.

Merlin

This baby was rescued from the side of a busy road.  Merlin was only about six weeks old and should have still been with his Mum.  He was very poorly and severely dehydrated so he was immediately placed in an incubator then given warmed subcutaneous rehydration fluids.  He spent the next three days being hand fed and it wasn't long before his condition slowly began to improve.  Several weeks later and at a healthy weight of over 600gms, he went on to be released into an open garden where there was supplementary food left every evening and a nest box provided.

Alice

'Alice' was rescued with a severe head wound most likely caused by a careless act with a garden spade.  She had given birth to three babies which were also in our care.  She lost a lot of blood while the wound was being treated and was given antibiotics to help clear the infection which had also tracked into her eyes. 'Alice' put up with a lot of treatment over the next couple of weeks but pleased to say she made a good recovery.  She has now been released back into the garden where she was found.
