April 2020

Boris..........

April saw several hedgehogs admitted that had emerged from hibernation with hardly any bodily resources left.  Many were literally just skin and bone.  We lost six during April despite doing our utmost to save them, but they were too far gone and beyond help.  But not all were lost.
One of these was the aptly named Boris, found in a garden in Cleveleys during the daytime, indicating something wasn't right.  He wasn't a bad weight at 500gms for the time of the year, but nevertheless his skin just hung round him like a cloak.  He was treated for internal and external parasites and by the end of April weighed nearly a kilo.  He was released back into the garden where he was found and the couple there have provided a newly made nest box and feeding station for him, also plenty of supplementary food left out for him.
The above photo was taken on the day of his release 25th April.

Ernie......

We had several hedgehog brought in during April with bad injuries including this little chap.  'Ernie' was admitted at the end of April with a nasty abscess on the side of his face and neck.  It isn't known how he sustained the injury but it has created massive infection. He is currently being treated with antibiotics and anti inflammatory painkillers and receiving intensive care, but remains very poorly. The outcome very much depends on how much infection is already in his system.

UPDATE:  2nd May - The abscess has now been drained.  Ernie must be feeling much better as he is eating for himself now.
UPDATE:  24th May - Ernie did really well, the infection cleared up and he was finally released on 24th May.
Bert......

Bert was rescued in April after being found wandering around a local garden during the daytime. He had an injury to his jaw, also a bad infection in one eye, plus a touch of ringworm (a fungal infection of the skin).  He was treated with antibiotics and fed soft food that he could manage to eat.  His condition much improved after two weeks and so began treatment for ringworm.
UPDATE:
Bert's injury to his jaw and his infected eye was now much better, and so he was released back into the garden where he was found on 8th May weighing just over a kilo!
