March 2020

Houdini.........

The end of March now sees the release of all the over wintered hedgehogs while there is a break in the weather. One of the ones for release is little one-eyed Houdini.  She came to us from the Cleveleys area last December weighing just 320 gms and with her left eye missing.  She was quite poorly with a multitude of internal parasites and with no appetite at all despite trying her with several different foods.  The only thing she would eat was Royal Canin cat biscuits.  Following treatment and a supply of her favourite biscuits over winter, she now weighs over one kilo!  She will be released into a safe release site in Stanah where there is support feeding and plenty of nest sites available (thank you Janet).  Hedgehogs can manage very well in the wild with just one eye, as they rely much more on their sense of smell and hearing than sight.

Update: May 1st.  It was good to hear that Houdini has been seen late at night coming for food in the garden she was released into.  She is managing well and seems to be staying in the immediate area where there is food put out every evening.
